UP now ahead of Rajasthan as top milk producer

The latest 'basic animal husbandry statistics' show that Uttar Pradesh has replaced Rajasthan as the top milk producer in 2022-23. However, Rajasthan reported the highest number of cattle deaths due to lumpy skin diseases (LSD) in 2022, resulting in losing the top spot. The milk output increased by 3.8% during 2022-23, with exotic/crossbred cows yielding 8.5 kgs per cow per day and indigenous/non-descript cows yielding 3.4 kgs per cow per day. Punjab leads in both categories. Per capita availability of meat has steadily increased from 5.7 kg per annum in 2016-17 to 7.1 kg per annum in 2022-23.
