At least eight people have lost their lives in a shallow earthquake that hit northwest China overnight, as stated by the state-run news outlet Xinhua. The outlet reported that rescue operations were underway following a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that caused significant tremors in parts of Gansu and neighboring Qinghai province. The quake occurred at 11:59 pm local time on Monday (1559 GMT).
