Two days after convicting Tamil Nadu minister K Ponmudy in a corruption case, Madras high court on Thursday sentenced him and his wife to three-year jail term, besides imposing a fine of Rs 50 lakh each. The convicted couple, however, were not taken to jail as Justice G Jayachandran suspended the sentence for 30 days to enable them to approach the Supreme Court for appeal. Ponmudy ceased to be a minister on Tuesday when the judge pronounced the verdict holding him guilty under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
