The Supreme Court has directed states and Union Territories to adhere to the 1996 definition of 'forest' and has put a stay on the 2023 amendment to the Forest (Conservation) Act. The court has ruled that establishments of zoos or safaris in forests will require prior permission from the court. States have been ordered to submit reports on forest land identification by March.
