Kidney transplant breakthrough: Scientists create universal donor to fight shortage

Scientists converted a type A kidney into a type O universal donor kidney. Enzymes removed specific antigens from the organ. The converted kidney worked normally for two days in a brain-dead patient. Antigens then reappeared. This research shows a path to reduce kidney transplant waiting times. It could benefit many type O patients.
